On Saturday January 28th, 2017, I went to observe a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in my neighborhood. It was an open meeting. The meeting started at 6:30pm and ended at 8pm. The location was in the Ready, Willing and Able building at 520 Gates Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11221. When I walked into the building, I had to take a short staircase down to the room where they were holding the meeting. The group leader which was a woman was there setting up the snack table with chips, cookies and juice. There was a man all the way in the back of the room with his back turned away from everyone. The room had white walls with different portraits. There were a couple of black tables with black chairs. Everyone sat where ever they felt comfortable. The group leader waited about 10 minutes for more people to gather in the room. When the meeting started, there were six people. Everyone was …show more content…
Once she was finished, she let a guest speaker which was a part of the group come up to speak to the group. The guest speaker looks like he was in his early 40’s. He spoke about how he was four years clean. Everyone clapped to show him support. He said that his life is on the right track now. He’s about to get his associate degree in June. He also described the person he was. He said that he “use to live…live to use” and he didn’t care. He said he was promiscuous with men and women. He told the group because of his reckless ways, he became HIV+. He said he was so thankful for the NA group because he feels he would have been dead without it. Then older man in his 50’s spoke and said he could relate to the first guy’s story because he was promiscuous with men and women while using. He said that was 2 years clean and everyone clapped for him. He appreciates the group because it keeps him on track. He also shared that he maybe HIV+ and just waiting for the
