Narrative Analysis: The Arrival And Journey

Traveling on this voyage, two different stories, The Arrival and Journey tell their struggles and achievements through a visual perspective. In The Arrival, the artist illustrates a life of an immigrated man who is unfamiliar with his surroundings and culture. As for Journey, it is a video game where the player manipulates a figure who is going to a place towards the mountain to find their will in life while engaging around with their surroundings. In this academic analysis I will be analyzing The Arrival and Journey towards the principles and theories of Molly Bang and Scott McCloud.

In this panel, a short story is being told by a woman who the protagonist meets, who tells her story of when she was a young girl. This young girl she talks about is forced into horrendous labor that is not meant for her. Applying McCloud's theory to these panels, Shaun Tan uses an aspect to aspect transition for the girl who is having a peaceful break reading a book, then the evil guy grabs her by the hand and puts her book away, to then open a door which enters into a workroom. The most important part of this panel is the focal point that is only directed at the girl. The reader then can sense what is like being her at the moment. This focal point or spotlight shown on her is what Molly Bang describes the center page of which the place has the most attraction. These panels show the bigger and the smaller silhouettes with the girl and the anonymous man. Adding on, as you keep scanning downward until the last panel you can see how small she is getting to the point that she seems powerless and feels like she doesn't have a voice anymore by the way Tan blurs out her
