Narrative Arguments On Hedonism And The Way Of The Badass

Two of the Life-Narrative Arguments described in Module 3 that may be used to explain perpetrators of violent crime are Hedonism and the Way of the Badass. The former of these theories describes a criminal who gets a rush from committing a crime. They are typically unmarried, unemployed, have few obligations, and have an unregulated use of drugs, sex and gambling. The latter of these arguments describes people who exert willpower over reason, often use revenge against humiliation as a motivation, and are likely to commit crimes to assert their dominance. Both of these arguments can be connected to two other theories given within this module.

The biological theory states that crime is overwhelmingly a male phenomenon, as males are both more likely to be perpetrators and victims. They also have the physical size and strength to ‘succeed’ more often at violent crimes (such as assaults), when compared to females. Males are more likely to engage in risky behaviors (such as those explained in the Hedonism analysis), and act more individualistic. Conservatives who tend to use the cultural theory believe that this individualism and lack of authoritarianism is an explanation of violent crimes. On the other hand, females are raised to be more nurturing (which involves having obligations to others), and submissive. This even relates to the age of criminals, as older (more mature) males are more likely to have responsibilities, but females of all ages tend to have family obligations and a socialized need to care for others, which makes having a hedonistic or ‘impenetrable badass’ mentality unrealistic.
