Its a character building experience, you learn camaraderie, communication, conflict resolution leadership, and so much more. Camaraderie and communication was needed during my journey. I can remember a time when there was a tree that had fallen over was stuck on a rock and jutting out into the river. If we had not communicated and moved quickly we would have lost our raft and been in danger. Ten teenagers from all over the country spending sixteen days with each other after couple days there is bound to be some conflict, one guy I became with, Spencer, got into a fight with a different guy, Mike. The councilors told us to resolve it ourselves in a nonviolent and civilized manor, we held a hearing and elected an unbiased arbitrator to decide how to handle the situation, and in the end the conflict was resolved and we had no other serious problems. Me and my peers were given a tremendous amount of responsibility and leadership opportunities, whether it was skippering the raft, deciding where to stop for the night, holding the map and plotting our course.
Week two started off with a three hour bus ride about 30 miles from the base of the Middle Sister of Cascade Mountains. We started off slowly but after a few days we were already there.
