In the short narrative story “The Chase” by Annie Dillard, she reveals group identification which can be found in sports. Sports bring out the best in individuals and at the same time bring strong individuals together. I can relate to endurance of the pursuit in my passion for basketball and allowed me to realize as the well dressed man in her story chases her and some boys for a foolish prank. Did you ever want something so bad that you would do whatever it takes? I did and it was all for the game of basketball. Ever since I was eight years old I dreamed of wearing the blue and white uniform after watching the varsity girls play. I played year round for CYO, travel, and AAU teams. I also played five years on modified, freshman, and the junior varsity team it was finally my turn to try-out for the varsity team. After a long week of grueling try-outs it was decision day. We all gathered in the hallway anxiously awaiting our fate. It felt like I was under water because I couldn’t breathe. Thoughts danced around in my head, did I practice enough? Was my defense good enough? Did I make the team? This last question I kept asking myself repeatedly but I knew that my answer was minutes away. The coaches finally called upon me. What bothered me the most was that I never received any positive or negative feedback only that I wasn’t tall enough. Now I realize that I am no Lisa Leslie and that I am only 5 feet 2 inches, but what I lack in size I have in heart and determination and I have been told by coaches and teammates that I am good player. Didn’t my coaches see the movie rudy? I was taught at a young age if you work hard and practice you will reach your goal and succeed. To say I was disappointed was an understatement.
