The account reports about the story of the exploration of the land along the coast of North America by the Europeans in the early 1500s. This exploration was led by Panfilo de Narvaez, who took along men, including Cabeza de Vaca. A shipwreck however, cut short the exploration. This made Narvaez ask the men to make rafts on which they could float to Mexico. The raft was not very strong and they had run out of provisions. This led to the death of some men including Narvaez. The rest of the men including Cabeza de Vaca were thrown up on an island off the coast of Texas and they decided to make the rest of the journey on foot. They ran into the Indians and the natives and had to stop because they were getting sick, cold and hungry. The natives took them as captives and they planned to escape after a while. They later made their way out, walking through Texas and New Mexico, where people treated them as respected healers. They finally made it near Mexico in 1536 and saw the signs of other Spaniards.
The natives took Cabeza de Vaca and his companions, captive because they thought they were the ones responsible for the deaths and sickness of their people. They wanted them to heal the sick ones among them if they wanted to survive.
