Coming into Texas State I did not know anyone. I came from a very strict family that did not allow me to do much outside of school events. In high school my life consisted of work, basketball, and school. I was a very shy kid and was definitely not known as the party kid that hung out with all the popular kids on the weekend. Instead, I was studying, working, or helping my dad around the house. I had no idea how much my life would have changed for the better. Luckily, at summer orientation a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity invited me out to one of their upcoming parties. Initially, I was hesitant and did not know if it would be a good idea. Thank God, I ended up talking myself into going. In just a few hours, he must have introduced me to fifty other Texas State students. Not only that, he got me a couple very good looking girls phone numbers! In just one night I realized that joining a fraternity might be the best thing in the world for me. Not only have I enjoyed meeting tons of people and all the parties, this fraternity has taught me so much more in life. Coming into college my social skills were way below average. Now, I am an exec member that talks confidently for about 4-5 minutes every Tuesday in front of a chapter of nearly 80 people. This is a task that would have scared me to death three years ago. My fraternity also strives for the best grades on campus. Mandatory library hours are assigned each week to ensure our grades are up every semester.…
