With the rise of populism across the United States and Europe, national and ethnic identity has become a political talking point. The idea that a nation will increasingly see individuals from different races, nationalities, religions, and socioeconomic positions is controversial. Many individuals on the far-right and far-left contend that immigration lowers wages and living standards for those that are already in a particular country. Coupled together with stagnating economies in Western Europe and North America has renewed the debate whether society should be receiving immigrants and large numbers of refugees that will compete with native-born citizens. The central talking point in the immigration debate is that immigrants push down wages, but immigrants lower the cost of business which allows for economic firms and actors to invest the surplus into new line of production (Schumacher-Matos 2011, 125). The resulting lower prices for goods allow society to shift income into other areas which allows the economy to grow further. The data for this project will come from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The independent variable that will be used is the percentage of foreign born population from 33 OECD countries. Control variable will be the population of the country measured in millions, the labor force participation rate, and the percent of the population that is of working age. The dependent variable will be GDP measured in US Dollars, GDP per capita as measured in US Dollars, average wages as measured in US Dollars, Labor Force productivity, Public Social Welfare spending per capita measured in US Dollars and average hours
