The distinction of being part of the National Honor Society has encouraged me to increase my civic engagement over the past two years and has provided me with a multitude of opportunities. I have truly gained a new respect for volunteer work as I have had more experience within the community. I have spent many hours volunteering at locations such as the Cause For Pause Thrift Shop and The Purple Shoe. Experiences at locations such as these have given me a greater respect for hard work and selflessness. I cherish the memories of serving at these locations because of the interactions I am able to have with others. You must be creative with how you interact with children younger than yourself. It often takes longer for children to understand instructions or explanations since they are still learning. Taking time to try and teach another person is an eye opening experience. I once sat with a kindergarten girl for an hour helping her learn the numbers. She would continually get confused and I had to find new ways to explain which numbers were “friends” and which numbers were “magic.” As silly as it may sound, after working with someone for so long and you see them start to understand what you are teaching, the feeling is extraordinary. I still remember how proud I was of that student and it lights a fire underneath me to help others. Another eye opening experience I had was volunteering at the Special Olympics. Even though I am friends with people who have disabilities and understand that it is never truly constraining, I was still shocked when I attended this event. I wrongly showed up with the preconception that I would have to assist the players much more than I actually had to. I was assigned to help with the softball tournament for that day and after watching them play, I was astounded by their skill
