Definition: A minority is a relatively small group of people; especially one commonly discriminated against in a community, society, or nation, differing from others in race, religion, language, or political persuasion (Merriam Webster). Minorities are stereotyped because of who they are perceived to be by the media and other influential figures. They are often told no because of who they are perceived to be. They are put down because of who they are perceived to be. The essays of Sherman Alexie and Victor Villanueva address what it’s like to be part of a stereotyped minority, while Jacqueline Jones Royster addresses how to overcome these stereotypes. In the memoirs written by Sherman Alexie, Victor Villanueva and Jacqueline Royster overcome stereotypes and barriers by exceeding expectations. Alexie, Villanueva, and Royster combat the stereotypes placed on them by society, by showing their struggle and determination, as well as offering solutions to become more culturally aware.
In “Superman and Me,” Alexie overcomes his struggles by gaining literacy and breaking the norm for Native Americans. Native Americans make up approximately two percent of the United States of America’s total population
