“Character is the real foundation of all worthwhile success.” -John Hays Hammond. Most people believe sports are just a game. However, there are more to sports than winning or losing. The impact that sports can have on one’s life is transformative. My developing character and who I am as a person can be attributed to being a Navarro High School athlete. Sports helped build my confidence, taught me many life lessons, and taught me how to persevere. Playing sports at Navarro helped me gain more confidence. I had to have confidence to play to the best of my ability every single volleyball game. I learned to believe in myself on the court, while the stands were filled with people watching. I also learned to have confidence while playing golf, since it is an individual sport and I can only rely on myself. Another quality that I have been able to develop through sports at Navarro is the ability to persevere. During my freshman year, I played half the season on JV, and then I got pulled up to sit the bench on Varsity. Throughout this year, my coach said some negative comments towards me. One of them being that I sucked the energy out of practices and did not have enough heart for the game. Going into my sophomore year, I was a little skeptical about playing. I could have let a coach’s negativity be the reason to stop playing. However, I decided that I was not going to let one person ruin my love for the game, and dreams of playing volleyball in college.
