As soon as the boys find one another on the island they unanimously chose Ralph as the leader as he is the one with the conch shell. This decision would begin to frustrate Jack, as Ralph makes guidelines that Jack doesn't agree with making him ultimately become a savage and decide that he will kill off anyone that decides to get in his way.
