“Neat People vs. Sloppy People” and “Size 6: The Western Women’s Harem,” Regardless what part of the world we come from, society suggests (in some cases forces) what our expectation of others should be. We view everyone differently, either through our own prejudice or through what we have come to believe is the expectation of society. I chose the following essays: Suzanne Britt, “Neat People vs. Sloppy People” p. 242 and Fatema Mermissi, “Size 6: The Western Women’s Harem,” p. 274 to discuss in this essay. The authors of both essays have presented their observations in a very interesting way. One tells of not being the “ideal” size through the eyes of marketing and the other in a sarcastic way appears to justify being judgmental, both projecting perception. However, I do feel that living entirely with that premise leads to one becoming judgmental. An example of this in Pollitt’s essay regarding gay marriage as preventing procreation (Pollitt 530). It is thought that two men or two women cannot have a child, while the ability to adopt removes that argument. One has to ask, is that what you feel or is this a societal requirement? Another example is in Britt’s essay. While it is understood the piece is satire, she suggests that neat people are meaner than sloppy people (Britt 242). What drew this conclusion? Is it due to jealousy of a messy person of a neat person’s organizational skills? Perhaps it’s a way of making an excuse to be sloppy. The fact remains, this conclusion was drawn based on
