Before English colonization, India was a prosperous, powerful country with successful industries, a rich, diverse culture, and freedom for the people. The affluent industries of India before British rule sold fine textiles, delicious spices and food, and other highly coveted goods. These industries shaped India’s prosperous economy, which made it a target for British colonization. India also had a very diverse culture with many different religions, customs, and traditions. British rule affected the Indian people’s culture by forcing their own religion and customs upon them and ultimately dissolving the unique Indian culture. Before colonization, the Indian people had more freedom to participate in activities they enjoyed. British rule, however, leached their freedom from them and caused widespread suffering by imposing taxes and revoking …show more content…
A once peaceful country, India was plagued with riots and violence during British rule; protesters angry at the unfair British laws and segregation were put down in events such as the Amritsar Massacre, further persuading people to become Indian nationalists. Therefore, British rule caused damage to India’s peaceful culture by enforcing unfair laws and using military might. Another negative effect of British colonization was the decline of India’s economy by destroying Indian industries. British rulers ruined Indian industries so they could sell their own English goods, thus causing the decline of India’s economy. Additionally, the British displayed a strong military to show their superiority over Indians. Although one might think that British military protection was beneficial to India, it in fact deteriorated India’s own military, essentially replacing it. British military also caused the deaths of many Indians, so it was not beneficial in that sense. All in all, British colonization in India was did not effectively help
