In the movie Dead Poets Society, the idea of carpe diem is expressed throughout the whole movie. Carpe diem means seize the day or to make the most of present time and give little thought to the future. Mr. Keating the boy's teacher in the movie expresses to them how easy it is to use carpe diem in their daily lives. There are positives and negatives that come with carpe diem and it is easy to mesh the two together.
There are many positives of carpe diem such when Knox Overstreet got the girl he wanted by seizing the day and saying screw the consequences I want this girl. Mr. Keating taught the boys about conformity and how's there's not one right way to walk, so act on their own and have fun with it. Carpe diem is living in the moment and having fun, it's taking chances and worrying about the consequences later. It's sucking the marrow out of life or that's what the dead poet's society was dedicated to. "Sucking the marrow out of life" sounds negative but in many ways, it could be positive, it could be positive in the aspect that they're getting everything out of life. The boys didn't see a problem with carpe diem during the movie, but they're many negatives to it.

Charlie Dalton used carpe diem in a reckless way, he used the dead poet's society as a joke to get girls and carpe diem got him suspended many times. Mr. Keating failed to teach the boys that there are negatives to carpe diem and that it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Many of the boys negative seize the day moments would not of happened if Mr. Keating expressed the negligence of their choice and how they need to choose wisely.
