World War 1 had a negative impact upon Australians and their identity, as issues like the conscription debate, death and unhygienic conditions created segregation. The men and women who went to war experienced contaminated, repulsive living conditions. The death of these people caused much pain and suffering and, the conscription debate generated division. As a result Australians lost much of their slowly developing identity.
The war began in 1914 and was greeted with much enthusiasm by Australian citizens, conditions and other important factors were not considered. Australia had never had much to do with a war and expected it to conclude in four weeks, they believed that it provided an opportunity to demonstrate courage and bravery. Australia’s
