Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th, 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa. He was the son of Chief Henry Mandela, and was a part of the Madiba clan of the Xhosa speaking Thembu people. His dad died when he was very young and he was raised by Jongintaba, the regent of the Thembu. He studied to become a lawyer at the University of Fort Hare. In 1944, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) where he became the leader of the party’s youth group. In the ANC, Nelson Mandela fought against racial segregation in South Africa. He did this by campaigning against South Africa’s pass laws, and protested against discriminatory laws. His antiapartheid activism made him a target of the authorities.
