In the compassionate movie Finding Nemo, directed by Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich, Marlin, a father who lost his wife goes through life persistently in fear of everything that surrounds him. To illustrate, Marlin is scared of all of the things that are beyond his safe, enclosed home. On Nemo’s first day of school, we see Marlin anxiously making sure it is okay to travel outside. “So, first we check to see that the coast is clear. We go out and back in… And sometimes, if you wanna do it four times, you can.” (Stanton & Unkrich, x:xx) Marlin is so traumatized from his wife's brutal death that even years after that fateful day, the possibility of getting killed or losing Nemo is almost all he thinks about. In fact, when Nemo wants to touch the butt of the boat to show his dad that he no longer needs to be treated like a baby, Marlin gets very worrisome. “Nemo what do you think you're doing? You're going to get stuck out there and I'll have to get you before another fish does. Get back here!” (Stanton & Unkrich, x:xx) Marlin doesn't want to risk losing his son like he lost his wife, so it causes him to excessively watch over Nemo. He takes many precautions in an attempt to defend his child from the great beyond, but in doing so, he sparks Nemo’s curiosity. This eventually leads to Nemo getting taken away and separated from his dad, the complete opposite of what Marlin hoped for. Above all, Marlin truly loves Nemo and wants him to be safe and unharmed.
