The Life of Chesty Puller Lewis "Chesty" Puller was born on June 26th 1898 in West Point, Virginia. Early on in his life his father died when Lewis was only 10 years old. He listened to tales of veterans from the Civil War and decided to one day enlist in the United States Army to fight in the Border War with Mexico. Unable to join due to his young age he decided to go to the Virginia Military Institute. One year later, he left to "go where the guns are!" and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In 1991 Burke Davis's book Marine! The Life of Chesty Puller was published. His book is the Biography of this courageous hero and how he became the only Marine in history to receive 5 Navy Crosses. Puller was made a Second Lieutenant in the reserves but when the force was reduced to just 1,100 officers and 27,400 men led to him being put on an inactive reserve status just 10 days later and given the rank of Corporal. Corporal Puller soon received orders to serve in Haiti as a Lieutenant and saw action there. The United States was working on a treaty with Haiti, in the five years against the Caco rebels he was a part of over forty engagements.
