The United States has been a place of security for many New Americans as they leave everything behind and try have a new beginning of safety and freedom. The Advocates for New American Assimilation(AAA) has continuously advocated for immigrants and refugees as they face challenges that come with moving to a new country. AAA tries to educate those on the benefits of diversity, while helping New Americans assimilate into United States culture. In recent years we have noticed an increase in New Americans coming to the Midwest. With the sudden increase the issues they face and the way native-born Americans feel about them are evident. She had made the nearly two-week journey across the Atlantic Ocean with her two younger brothers. Her parents were already waiting in American, earning money in order to bring them over a few years later. They chose to come here for freedom of religion and opportunities for their family. Like many New Americans they came here to live a better life than in their homeland. Our goal matches up with theirs which is to “Support New Americans to become more connected, engaged, and contributing members of their new communities,” (“About”), but we wish to take it one step further and educate the rest of the Midwest. The program we wish to develop will provide English speaking classes all over the region. In 2013, there were 25.1 million Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals ages 5 and older in the United States (Batalova et al.). We want to help decrease that number, by helping New Americans utilize our classes, and creating a mentor program. The program will also go out into the community and educate other on New Americans, the challenges they face and how we can help. By educating others we will be able to put the stigma that is placed upon New Americans to rest. We understand that there is a program that has similar aspects to it already, but our program will be different because it will be all over the Midwest instead of one specific location.
