The New York Colony is one of the original 13 colonies located on the Atlantic Coast, which history is very important, because they started the forming and development of the United States. The original colonies were divided into three geographic areas: New England, Middle and Southern colonies. The New York Colony was classified as one of the Middle Colonies and was the second to be established. The Middle Colonies were different from the New England and the Southern colonies, because they were settled by people from different countries and for different reasons, and not just by Englishmen. New Netherlands was an ethical and religious diverse colony, where half of the population was Dutch and the other heritages included French, Germans, and Scandinavians and there was even a Jew congregation from Brazil. Since New York was located between the New England Puritan colonies and the catholic Maryland, the settlers had different beliefs and religions. The colony had significant religious freedom compared to the other colonies, having many minorities numbers. However, the Protestantism can be considered the main religion, because of the English and Dutch settlement. The religion practices were individualistic and segregated. New York became very important and served as the capital of the United States for a brief period between 1785 and 1790 after the colonies declared their independence. The city was very important and during the Revolutionary War, the English tried to seize it and it served as a British military base until 1783. However, it recovered quickly from this war and became of the most important seaports on the Atlantic Ocean and the trading capital of the country. In 1810, New York became the largest city in the Western Hemisphere. Currently, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and a nucleus of immigration. It is also considered as the cultural and financial capital on the world. All this historical periods and events that happened in New York show how this colony grew fast and became a significant spot and state that contribute to the growth and the development of America and the world, as
