Although close geographically, New England and the Chesapeake had very distinct qualities during the colonial era. Britain originally wanted to colonize these areas to expand their empire. Having colonies would bring more money and goods to England. So, ships were sent out and soon, much of the east coast of the new world was colonized by Britain. Different areas, specifically New England and the Chesapeake, developed their own unique customs and ways of life. Main differences between New England and the Chesapeake in the colonial era were the types of settlers who traveled to each region: which colony had more men, families, servants, etc. Additionally, the economies and governments of each region were determined by differences in climate and religion. In New England, the government was based off of Puritan beliefs. One law in Connecticut stated that citizens should receive enough profit for them to serve God and their neighbors, and that they should not indulge and spend money at their leisure. Conversely, indentured servitude and the headright system played an important role in the Chesapeake’s economic system. New, wealthy Virginians took advantage of the headright system and became powerful plantation owners.
