New Year’s Day, 1860 You`re sure she`s dead. The Commissioner of Police asked Carlisle when he reported for duty. “Yes, I saw where she was buried!” Said Carlisle, pretending not to know why he was sent all the way to America to find Mary Morter. He provided a sealed confession letter from Frederick’s old law partner to the Commissioner who looked at to make sure it had not been opened. It contained a detailed explanation of the importance of Mary Morter and the conspiracy that was done in place from London to New York City. The Chartist movement was making one last gasp of power by conspiring with the lawyer and others to remove Queen Victoria and her government in order to put in a friendlier monarch supportive of their cause. The Commissioner folded the letter and placed it in his top drawer. “Well, the queen will be disappointed about Mary but I have another assignment for you”. He said. Carlisle leaned forward to listen closely. “Sorry, to call you in a holiday” Said the Commissioner. “But we have an urgent mission for you. One of our gold shipments has gone missing from California and we need a man to investigate.
