New York Kouros Analysis

The piece of art work I would like to introduce and discuss is the New York Kouros, which is a life-size statue, about 6’1/2” tall, from Archaic period, around 590 to 580 BCE. It was found in Attica, Greece and is currently placed in Metropolitan Museum, New York. Focusing on the significance on the appearance and style of Kouros, I suggest that Kouros derives features from Egyptian cultural standards and has a undoubted influence on later Greek statues. While Guralnick points out some similarities between the proportion of Kouros and the Egyptian Canon, I think Egyptian monumental sculpture have undoubtedly influenced the development of Kouros, which sets a tone for proportions of later 4th and 5th century Greek Sculptures.
