The assessment incorporates screening and surveillance tools to prevent or recognise any problems, concerns or health issues and to provide early intervention. As well as providing education to families, therefore giving them the tools to understand and apply the determinants of health, for example providing information about safe sleeping to prevent SIDS. The baby check does not only look at the baby’s health it creates an opportunity to see how the whole family works together. This includes identifying the family’s strengths, empowering them to develop protective factors, build resilience and to make the right choices regarding their health. It assists in identifying and addressing the needs of vulnerable families, facilitating equity and access through universal and targeted services (NSW Department of Health, 2011). Working in partnership with the family promotes the health and well-being of children, identifies variations in health and development and intervenes when appropriate. I gave Niki and Peter the opportunity to promote and support healthy lifestyle choices like healthy nutrition and breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 month of life.
