In Newton Minow's speech to the National Association of Broadcasters in May of 1961, he has a foreshadowing view of the internet from his outlook on television. As the Chairman of the Federal Communication Commission, Minow has an educated perception of the good and bad that television and the world wide web retain. The power that they captivate continues to influence the taste, knowledge and opinions of its viewers around the world.
For example, a good quality of the internet is the abundance of information that is available at all times. While looking for colleges and scholarship opportunities the internet has been my main resource. It has helped me learn about many options that I was not aware of before. Another good use of the internet that also contributes to education would be the endless sources accessible for research papers. As a student I have used the virtual library repeatedly for many different papers. For example, while I was in middle school I wrote a research paper on honey bees. An instance of the data highway having a bad effect would be the time that I was bullied over, the social media website, Twitter. After having a terrible fight with a former friend a few years ago she then proceeded to exploit all the secrets I confided in her all over the electronic highway. As a result, I know first hand that the internet is not always a pleasant place for everyone. Another occurrence of negligent national information infrastructure use would be the time that someone on eBay tried to scam me out of money. I paid for an item on eBay but then soon after my payment was sent through PayPal, the post of my purchased item vanished. Therefore, I then sent off the information to eBay and Paypal until my almost bad situation was quickly resolved and my money was
