Nikki Giovanni is a famous poet. She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee but grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her real name is Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr., but she goes by Nikki. She was born in 1943 making her 73 years old. She writes children’s books and poetry collections. Giovanni has won multiple awards for her writing including the National Endowment for the Arts in 1970, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Dedication and Commitment to Service in 2009, three NAACP Image Awards for Literature in 1998, the Langston Hughes award for Distinguished Contributions to Arts and Letters in 1996, first recipient of the Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award, was a finalist for a Grammy Award in the Words Spoken category, as well as more than twenty honorary degrees from national colleges and universities. Giovanni enjoys writing to young audiences because she wants to share what she thinks will be interesting and helpful for them. She currently works at Virginia Tech as a University Distinguished Professor. Even though she has a job, she still writes in her free time. Giovanni started writing in late high school, early college. When writing, she tries to make her audience feel emotion, but she thinks it does not have to rhyme. Giovanni’s most popular topic that she enjoys writing about the most is about the civil rights movement. She has a book titled Rosa, which is about Rosa Parks.
