1980s Music During the nineteen eighties there were a lot of historical, political, and social events. Music in the nineteen eighties was very popular including genres like pop rock, hard rock and alternative rock. Music also helped shape the events going on in the nineteen eighties. Music has been beneficial to the world and music will continue to grow. The historical, political and social events of the nineteen eighties had helped shape the music and the technology of that that decade.

Jackson sold an unprecedented number of records and revitalized an industry with the release of a single album (Kallen 82). Jackson’s album Thriller had entered the Billboard Top Ten on January 3, 1983 where it stayed for seventy eight weeks and was number one for thirty seven weeks and went on to be the best selling record album of all time (Kallen 82). Jackson received eight grammys from the album Thriller and it was selling a million copies a week at one point (Kallen 82). Other music types like Alternative rock and Hard rock were very popular in the nineteen eighties. In the nineteen eighties Alternative rock, also known as Punk rock, was more of an underground genre of music at the time. Alternative rock exploded with the help of MTV's Lollapalooza which helped expose diverse bands such as Nine Inch Nails, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Hole (Azerrad). The other style of music known as Hard rock was popular in the nineteen eighties during its second era which showcased bands like Motley Crue, Van Halen and Def Leppard. Hard rock also showed the return of KISS who released their album Animalize which signified that they had officially entered the second Hard rock era (Dowley). Some of the most notable successes was Appetite For Destruction by Guns N’ Roses and Hysteria by Def Leppard, Motley Crue’s Girls, Girls, Girls and Whitesnake’s 1987
