Introduction
The Watergate scandal is quite possibly the biggest and most important event in the history of the United State’s presidencies. The scandal specifically is when the Nixon campaign directly orchestrated the break in to their opposing political party, the DNC. Following this, the Nixon campaign attempted to pay off the crooks but the crime was immediately investigated by congress. By this time, people had pled guilty and admitted to the crime and Nixon’s involvement. However, August 1st, 1972, a check for $25,000 dollars finds its way into the bank account of one of the burglars, and the check is quickly routed back to the Nixon reelection campaign. This was the second fatal mistake made by the Nixon campaign and when everything started to go downhill. Even though the Nixon campaign were already heavily accused and the only explanation to the unsolved mystery, this small flaw caused untrust in the nation for decades to come. The FBI investigated further into the sudden sum of money, to find thousands of more dollars allocated to the expenses that go up to months before the break-in. Even further investigation found a link to the finance sector of the CRP, strongly proving that more people than expected had knowledge of or were involved with the Watergate break-in. Breakthrough after breakthrough in the investigation is made and it is officially established that the Watergate break-in was due to an entire campaign of illegal activities organized by the Committee of the Re Election of Nixon. In the midst of the increasing exposure of the true crimes committed by the CRP, the 1972 presidential election comes around and Nixon has lost all trust from his supports and the general public, as well as many government officials. Nixon goes so far as to go on record, speaking to the American people, that he had no knowledge of the DNC break in, and no association with the burglars. His efforts prove to work, and Richard Nixon wins the 1972 election with one of the biggest landslides in American political history.
