NMO is considering whether or not to promote Sid to consumer relations consultant. Sid is a valued employee of the company and has worked at NMO for over 10 years. He has the necessary knowledge and experience to excel at the job and is also mentally ready. However he is setback due to his health problems which may mean he is not the most suitable person for the job.
Consumer Relations consultant is a visible role in NMO as it involves face to face and personal interaction with the customers. Sid being overweight might create a problem for NMO. It may not be the best choice to place Sid into such a visible job as he will be seen as a representation of the company when he is serving the clients. Sid has been previously noted to cause an atmosphere of unease to the public due to his unusually large size. Therefore Sid’s appearance will create a negative response from his new colleagues, consultants and customers due to him being overweight and his large size, therefore it may damage the firm’s reputation and hence compromise the firms image and profit levels. Sid’s weight problem can therefore create issues for not only the department but the company as a whole.
Sid possesses skills and a high level of knowledge of the products that the company offers which means that Sid is capable for the promotion to consumer relations consultant. Sid is considered a veteran of the company because of his many years of experience, it is noted by his superiors that he vast knowledge of a range of the company’s products which means that he can be seen as a better option than other less experienced applicants. Furthermore, it is also noted that he has participated in the consumer’s relations department and has had success in impressing the major benefit consultancies with his work behind the scenes. He also has a key skill of initiative as he has demonstrated in the case study when he successfully organises an unexpected meeting with a customer. Also, Sid’s knowledge will mean he is more than capable when it comes to providing answers to consumer and colleague inquiries.
