The waves crash against the rocks as the scorching hot sun beats down on my back during a warm August afternoon. My parents are sitting at the picnic table as my siblings are running around playing, enjoying themselves. Meanwhile, I sit on the dock with my feet in the warm water, looking out across the lake. All of us are waiting for the same thing: the biopsy report on my aunt. A few minutes pass by until I finally hear my mother’s phone ring. I slowly stand up and retreat from the dock and head towards my family. It’s on my way, when I realize my mom had just started crying. The fear grew in my stomach as the tears began to flow from my eyes. It was at that point when I knew our worst fear had come true. My aunt had just been diagnosed with cancer.
It was January 2, 2012, when I walked into the house after a long day of practice. I noticed something very strange as I opened the door: it was quiet in my house. I walked through the kitchen and into the dining room when I saw my family sitting around the table, all crying. My mom asked for me to take a seat: she had something to tell me. So not really knowing what was going on, I grabbed a seat and prepared for the worst. Once seated, my mom informed me that my cousin had called, to let her know that my aunt didn’t have much time left.
