The quote I chose is by Noam Chomsky. He observed that, “If we don’t believe in the freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all.” I believe this quote summarizes how Americans feel about immigrants and their fellow citizens—although, there are very few of us left who are willing to express such abhorrence. In this essay, I will discuss how this quote applies to the uprising of newcomers as well as ourselves. In 1910, the percentage of foreigners was at an all-time high of 14.7. Surprisedly enough, this led to a debate among scholars and politicians: could America sustain this seemingly everlasting growth? African Americans? Those that practice religion? They too struggled with the rights that were supposedly granted to them. Most specifically, the right to express certain ideas and opinion through the means of speech, writing, or even press. If the freedom of speech and of the press was important, that would be an understatement. It is certainly more than that—a real necessity for a nation as democratic as America. It is assumingly so crucial that in 1938, the Supreme Court declared that any legislation attempting to topple this; it would undergo a form of judicial review known as strict scrutiny. Despite such attempts by the government, there are yet people who are completely against this ideal. An example of this would be a political figure, Donald Trump, who is also a candidate for the Presidential election of 2016. When he announced his campaign in early June, Trump remembers to mention that Mexico is sending people—not just any people, but rapists, criminal, and drug addicts. This must mean that he despises Latinos, insisting that he must not believe in the same principle as Chomsky: that freedom of expression applies to everyone, including your “enemies.” If that was not enough to establish him as a hateful individual, when he reveals that he also loves Mexicans; does he love them enough to believe that they deserve the same rights that he has?
