Chavez states his explanation on how a nonviolent tactic is always the most effective, on obtaining a victory over a civil movement. He explains how violence can be seen as the most effective, but at the end of the day all it brings in reality is more problems. Chavez has been inspired by Dr. King and Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance. Throughout the article, Chavez presents the negative side of affiliating with a violent tactic. He throws pathos into his article by talking about tragic events that have led to the death of many protesters because of violence. In lines 49-51 Chavez says, “The burdens of generations of poverty and powerlessness lie heavy in the fields of America. If we fail, there are those who will see violence as the shortcut to change.” By giving the audience a feel of emotions by talking about the challenges faced in the fields, he wants to show his followers that patience through nonviolent resistance will aid the burdens. Chavez also explains about the negative side to violence, “...either the violence will be escalated and there will be many injuries and perhaps deaths on both sides, or there will be total demoralization of the workers.” Chavez explains that violence will ultimately lead each side with death, and it will only strip the spirit and courage of each side.
