During early colonial times in North America, the rich viewed the colonies as a temporary living place to get rich quick, and the poor saw it as their only option. Due to the lack of socialization and sense of permanence, the colonies lacked a sense of culture in the beginning. But culture develops on its own eventually, one way or another. The Puritan culture and way of life was quite focused on what your role was based on your status in society. It is important to realize that at this time it was difficult, if not impossible, to live outside the role that you were supposed to play.
