The sun was blazing on a hot July afternoon in North Carolina. A steady stream of tobacco sap was dripping in my eyes as the harvester continued down what seemed to be an endless row. It was at that moment I realized that I was going to be a senior in high school and I had put little thought in what I wanted to do after high school. Like most teenagers I lived for the day with little to no concern for the future. Fortunately, I did know that I was too immature to begin college, but most certainly wanted to earn more than the $15 a day I was earning as a farm hand. After school one day I noticed a flyer posted in the local convenient store by the local Army recruiter. The valuable lessons learned from those hot days in the fields of North Carolina have served me well and have shaped the foundation of whom I have evolved into as a student and as a leader.
