Northanger Abbey: Romantic Essentials Jane Austen’s novel, “Northanger Abbey,” is about a young girl, Catherine Morland, whom had to learn to distinguish between manipulative or arrogant love and love of a more caring and respective variety. Readers observe Catherine’s intellectual development and growth throughout the story. As a young adolescent she does not have the knowledge a normal girl her age should have. She gets an opportunity to experience fashionable a society for the first time located in Bath. At Bath, Catherine is inducted into the social world of balls and entertainments. She becomes acquaintances with the flirtatious Isabella, who introduces Catherine to the delights of Gothic romances, and sophisticated Henry and Eleanor Tilney, who invited her to their father’s house in Northanger Abbey. What makes for a successful romantic relationship? Catherine never dated prior to going to Bath, so she doesn’t know what it is to be in a good relationship. Building a romantic relationship isn’t just about the initial bonding; it’s about encouraging and supporting each other’s growth over the course of your lives. Henry states:”In one respect, there certainly is a difference. In marriage, the man is supposed to provide for the support of the woman; the woman to make the home agreeable to the man; he is to purvey, and she is to smile” (pg 74-75). A man should go out make money to provide for his family. A woman is supposed to stay home and take care of the house and kids. A compliment to each other for the “effort” giving goes a long way.
