Norway in 1850 was far from the ideal country its citizens wanted it to be, there were problems popping up all over the land, and soon enough many citizens found living in Norway to be unbearable.This discourse within the nation first began after losing to Britain during the Napoleonic wars in the early 19th century. Norway (who had sided with France) experienced a huge blow to their economy. The Royal Navy treated Norway with no small amount of cruelty in the years following their defeat, and had set up blockades off the Norwegian coast, hindering their import and export system, which, as a result, bankrupted many middle class merchant families.
