Nostradamus’ predictions offered him a lot of fame both during and after his lifetime. In 1556, he was invited to Paris by Catherine de’ Medici and King Henry II, as they were interested in his predictions. While in Paris, Nostradamus explained one of his prophecies to the royal family, as it pertained to the royal family. His prediction stated “The young lion will overcome the older one/On the field of combat in single battle/He will pierce his eye through a golden cage/Two wounds made one, then he dies a cruel death.”(cite website). After explaining the prophecy, Nostradamus recommended the king avoid any ceremonial jousting. While Nostradamus stated he based his published predictions on judicial astrology, scholars believe he referenced ancient end-of-the-world prophecies and then paraphrased them and projected them into the future. Still, many believe in the veracity of Nostradamus’ predictions and accredit him with predicting events such as the fall of Napoleon, the rise of Hitler, and even the attack on 9/11. Lee McCann presents multiple predictions of Nostradamus in his text Nostradamus, the Man Who Saw Through Time. McCann presents and analyzes various prophecies and how they could pertain to different instances in history. McCann suggest the following verse can be related to the beginning of World War II. The verse states, “When corruption and massacre have not put a stop to the situation/And there is death in the bomb-craters struck from high heaven,/The head of the Church will die when he see the ruin/And those who are shipwrecked clinging to the rock.”(cite). This prophecy, verse 56 from volume two of Centuries, very well could be applied to the beginning of the Second World War. In 1939, Pope Pius XI died about six months before the outbreak of war, which can be connected to this prophecy. On the other hand, some scholars have argued that Nostradamus has made what they call “post-dictions”, that is he made all of these predictions, but we
