Television series’ key purpose is to entertain and explore issues in our society related to a target audience. The television show Nowhere Boys was mainly created for teenagers to both interest and make commentary on issues that are usually faced by this specific audience. This series was produced by Tony Ayres for matchbox pictures. The show focuses on the lives of four boys (Felix, Andy, Jake and Sam) who throughout the show get caught up in a parallel universe by supernatural forces. From only six episodes the producers provide the audience with various themes including survival, family and identity, these have been proved in the form of stereotypes. Socially he is considered a “freak” and is accepted by his only friend, Ellen, who is also considered a Goth. In relation to his family he feels isolated since his parent’s attention is always diverted to his disabled brother, Oscar. In this situation the viewers are positioned to feel empathy or pity towards Felix because of the close-ups to his face, which holds the expression of guilt whenever his family is fussing over Oscar. In future episodes the audience discovers that Felix feels like an outsider due to his brother’s accident. Andy on the other hand has a strong sense of belonging to the boys by showing off his knowledge. Due to his family’s strict belief in academic excellence he has gained the information of many skills, which later on help and impress the boys in the parallel universe. Andy specifically impresses Jake who is known to bully him for being a “nerd”. As seen in the flashbacks the audience is positioned to believe that Jakes need to bully roots from his father’s negligence, he refers to him as a “loser”.
