Problem 1: A bolt is ordered with a thread diameter of 1.25 inches. What is this diameter in millimeters? If the order was mistaken for 1.25 centimeters, by how many millimeters would the bolt be in error?
• If the bolt was ordered with a diameter of 1.25 inches, the diameter in millimeters is 31.8 mm. I know this because for every 1 inch there are 25.4 millimeters, so I multiplied 1.25 inches by 25.4 millimeters to get my answer of 31.75 millimeters. If they were mistaken and meant to do the conversion between centimeters and millimeters, the bolt would be 12.5 millimeters since the relationship between millimeters and centimeters is 1cm/10mm.

• It is important to know and master units and conversion factors not only because just about every other country in the world uses the SI or metric unit of measurement, but because it will help you be able to better understand the numbers that you are working with.
2.What evidence supports your claim?
• The evidence that supports my claim are the two stories that I read above. After reading them, I needed no more explanation as to why conversions and labeling are so important not just in chemistry, but in the real world, too. Also, if I was not comfortable or even familiar with conversions and conversion factors, I would not have been able to answer the questions above or know why 35 kg is significantly different than 35 lb. Conversions are also necessary for everyday life, whether you are baking and need to know how many teaspoons equal a tablespoon, or are in the medical field and need to convert a patient’s weight from kilograms to pounds in order to not give them too much or too little of their medication.
