1. Personally I have never been into television especially reality TV, but when I got married it is all my wife likes to watch, especially The Bachelor. I would completely agree with what Professors Dalakas and Lagenderfer found; that eliminating the villain to early decreases interest in the show. People love conflict; if every episode was people getting along and hugging it out then it would be boring and the average person would change the channel really quick. Annette Hill is a researcher that did a study on the British version of Big Brother, she found viewers liked “watching members cope with the privations of the Big Brother house and watching conflict were the most popular aspects of the show”. Personally I do not think there is anything ethically wrong in manipulating the show to the viewers. I do not think viewers should be upset if they are watching and the show is not one hundred percent true; they are giving the viewers what they want, entertaining drama, this is what keeps the show alive and striving and that is just good business. What I think is ethically wrong is how they can keep the characters in the show by manipulating footage that provides a false image of a person. Producers use “an editing technique called ‘Franken bite’” (Crew, 2007) to create whatever image they like of the reality character. This can potentially hurt the reputation of anyone that the producers feel like they want to turn into the villain for drama, or to get a certain person kicked off the show if they are not doing the job of enhancing the drama, or appeal of the show to viewers. What concerns me about the producers of shows molding their own characters through film manipulation is what happens when the show is over and they have to go back to work? Do they just hope back into their normal life like nothing happened? I really doubt it. You not only have to worry about explaining yourself to your family, but also society. Every viewer of the show will know you as the person the producer made you to be. What if your next interview is with someone that watched the show?
