Every device that connects to the Internet has an IP address, including smartphones, game devices, some electronic devices and of course computers. This makes IP addresses very important for routing and Internet traffic to the device. Data travels in packets to and from the device by having the source of the IP address in their header which allows it to reach its destination. IP addresses are defined by the Internet Protocol, which is a part of the Internet Protocol Suite. The IPS sets the rules to manage how data packets travel across the internet to their destinations. IP is a connectionless protocol, which means that it doesn’t matter what order multiple packets are sent in or if they even arrive at all, IP doesn’t care. TCP/IP, also part of the IPS, on the other hand is a connection based protocol which ensures that all data arrives safely and in the correct order. There are two versions of Internet Protocol. IPv4, internet Protocol Version 4, was created in the 1970’s and uses a 32-bit address scheme and the new version, IPv6, which uses a 128-bit address scheme, was launched in 2012. Both protocols are being used today. IPv4 is used to identify devices on a network with an addressing system. “The IP is designed for use in interconnected systems of packet-switched computer communication networks”. They came up with IPv6. “IPv6 addresses are 128-bit numbers and are conventionally expressed using hexadecimal strings (for example, 2001:0db8:582:ae33::29)”. (Vegoda) “The 64 bits of the IPv6 address represent the network address which is used for routing and the rest 64 bits give details about the host’s network interface”. (Tiwari) The design of IPv6 will give us 2^128 new IP addresses. This will guarantee us new IP addresses and data transmission for the next several
