Hi Everyone,

I have finished marking your assignments and I am releasing them to you in Canvas. You will see your mark has been converted to a mark out of 15 (since the assignment is worth 15% of your final grade) but I have also attached your marked assignments so you can see where you made your errors and your total mark out of 57 on the assignment.

There are a few points I should make about the assignments:

1. Yellow highlighting indicates a loss of 1/2 mark, blue highlighting indicates a loss of 1.0 mark. In general, when I use the yellow highlighting to indicate a loss of a part of a mark I highlight the part of the answer that was incorrect.

2. I am not providing you with the correct answers at this time. It is more useful (if the goal is learning) to look at the questions where you lost marks and try to first sort out for yourself how you lost the mark. Much of the time this will be immediately apparent (particularly for citation errors). Of course now that you have completed the assignment you are welcome to discuss your answers with others.

Where people lost marks for substantive errors, it was often because they failed to read/answer the question properly. For example, on Question 17(d) I asked "How does this bill come into force?" and many of you simply stated a date. The problem with this answer is that a bill will always come into force sometime, and when you simply state a date it isn't clear if the means of coming into force was Royal Assent, date specified in the bill, by regulation of the Governor in Council or Lieutenant-Governor in Council, etc.

5. Another reason some people lost marks for substantive errors was a failure to read the legislation, to ensure the section or subsection they were citing actually did what they were claiming. For example, on Question 20 I asked about "... federal legislation that establishes a number of public holidays", and a number of you cited the Labour Code, which doesn't in fact create holidays at
