Earache
Q1. My son is complaining that he feels some pain in his ear but that is not constant pain, it occurs after some interval of time. Is there some serious problem?
A1. Earaches are very common in children, but adults too are prone to earaches. It can occur in one or both the ears. It can be a burning, dull or sharp pain and can be constant or occur for a short time at regular intervals. So don’t worry, you can try some home remedies and if problem still persists consult doctor.
Q2. What is the major cause of earache?
A2. Ear infections are one of the most common causes of earache. Some of the ear infections that can result in earache are-
• Otitis Externa
• Otitis Media (very common in children)
• Barotitis Media
• Myringitis

Even though ear infection are commonly held responsible for earache, there are some other causes as well that can cause earache. Some of the common ones are-
• Glue ear, a condition where there is abnormal accumulation of fluid in the eardrum
• Infected hair follicle inside the ear canal
• Throat infection
• Water or shampoo trapped in the ear
• Sinus infection
• Buildup of earwax
• Conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract
• Cold and fever
• Seborrhoeic dermatitis (eczema in ear canal)
• Any kind of ear blockage
• Pain in the jaws
• Sudden change in air pressure, like when the plane ascends and descends
• Tooth pain
• Facial nerve pain
• Any kind of ear canal injury
Q4. What could be the possible symptoms of Earache?
A4. Apart from the pain, there are also some other common symptoms of earaches-
• A child may tug, rub or pull the ear
• Sufferer may appear irritable and hot
• High body temperature
• Loss of appetite
• Runny nose
