Written Assignment Unit 7

If the movement of people, food, and manufactured goods can have such a negative impact on public health, should steps be taken to reduce these flows? What other options are there for lowering the spread of global diseases?

Despite different protective trade policies that many countries have been implementing and the slow growth of international trade that the world is experiencing this year, the amount of people traveling internationally is continuing to rise, so I don’t see how we can reduce the flow of people, food and other goods. Besides vaccination and enforcing customs inspections, other options for lowering the spread of global disease are the following:
Improve infrastructures and make clean water supply easily accessible for the 30% of the world population who don’t have clean drinking water.
Provide better living standard

How do you feel about genetically modified organisms (GMOs)? Do you feel that the benefits outweigh the costs of producing food in this manner? Why or why not? Explain.

I am sure that the scientists who worked on GMO plants (and animals) have good intentions to solve the food problems, and that there’s benefits in their creation. However, my personal preference will be to give GMOs a bit more time to “prove” itself so to speak. I have concerns on its long term effect on the livelihood of other species, and question its effect on the farmer’s right to grow unmodified crops without having to worry about their fields getting “contaminated” by neighboring GMO’s crops. Then there’s also the concern of big companies cornering the seed market which would make farmer’s lives more difficult.
