Identification of design
Quantitative:
Foster-Fitzpatrick and colleagues used a comparative-experimental method design that involved a non-probability sampling of 100 hypertensive males to determine if crossing the leg at the knee during blood pressure measurement has an effect on the patient’s blood pressure reading? In this experimental research the implementation of blood pressure (independent variable) will be monitored, and the acquisition about cross-leg (dependent variable) will be measured. The hypotheses are not clearly stated, although the study does state expectations according to their…show more content… However, if there is not a diverse range for comparison to the population, the findings in this study could have little or no significant to the medical field who performs blood pressures on larger diverse groups.
Qualitative:
The data collection strategies were appropriate and specifically described for the study design, e.g., (Audio recorder). The researcher demonstrated empathy during the interview by having the participant take time out to calm down during episodes of emotional distress. Open-end questions were used to encourage freedom of speech, and brief interviews were conducted to minimize time frames.
Ethical Considerations
Quantitative:
No ethical safeguards were explained in the study. However, moving the subjects to a quiet room with a temperature of 73 degrees demonstrated Non-maleficence and privacy. Autonomy was violated when subjects were not fully informed of what was being investigated. Appropriate informed consent procedures were not used. However, verbal consent was obtained. This article was accepted for publication on September 29, 1998 for approval and monitoring by an Institutional Review Board. 16 subjects were omitted for failure to take their medication prior to screening; as well as other subjects who had histories of lower extremity diseases and amputations. Respect for justice was not considered when scrutinizing of the sample selection.
