Nurse Jackie Influence On Nursing

Television series and movies influence the way people think. Sometimes these influences are so subtle that it goes unnoticed. One particular profession that is influenced by our entertainment; is nursing. Some media display nurses as heroic people while others barely show their existence in the medical setting. One television show series that I believe does not accurately portrays nurses is “Nurse Jackie”. Nurse Jackie is a well experienced nurse who works in the emergency department, in New York. Jackie is the main character who most of the physicians want working with them; despite her attitude. Jackie is a fast critical thinker who always wants the best for her patients. For example, a patient that Jackie was working with was diagnosed with lupus. This patient was unable to pay for her much needed medications. Jackie found a legit route for this patient to get most of her much needed prescriptions for free. Jackie may be hard to work with sometimes because of her attitude, however she never forgets that the patients always come first. Jackie has two kids; one who is a teenager and another who is in elementary school. There is a stigma that goes with being a nurse. The stigma that I am referring to is that nurses should know “everything” and that their lives are “perfect”. Jackie demonstrates that though a nurse can be in control and know her job, but their home life can be completely different. Jackie’s teenaged daughter was going through typical teenager activities and behaviors. For instance, Jackie’s eldest daughter tried different drugs, demonstrated rebellious behavior, and an overall had a bad attitude. Jackie did not know what to do with this situation, but she didn’t mind asking for
