Nursing is always changing. With change, issues arise. Societal influences have led to some of these challenges. One prominent challenge in nursing curriculum is the lack of clinical sites. Many factors contribute to this issue, including nursing shortage, facility shortage, the lack of collaboration between facility and institutions, and increased competition for these clinical sites. This paper will discuss these factors that contribute to the lack of clinical sites that nursing education curriculum is facing, how it will impact future employment, and strategies to resolve this issue.

Through research, determination, and commitment to improving student learning, solutions can address the lack of clinical sites for student learning. One solution would include high-fidelity simulation labs that include realistic scenarios. Using simulation labs to teach students is not a new concept. In World War II, pilots learned to operate aircrafts through simulation models. Student pilots were given different procedures that also included emergency situations. The students were taught to determine if the malfunction was abnormal or emergent which allows that student to use two different thought processes. “By simulating the stress of different emergencies, a student can learn how to deal with the shock of the situation and minimize the delay in responding to the emergency” (Spector & Odom, 2012, p. 41). Nursing students can benefit from using simulation labs as part of their clinical experience. Partin, Payne, and Slemmons (2011) conducted a study to determine if students improved their clinical skills through a high-fidelity simulation experience. The results showed that this setting promoted a safe atmosphere where the student able to used critical thinking and observation. Students that have participated in a high-fidelity simulation were found to make better clinical decisions than those that have not (Benner, 2012). Schools that use simulation labs as part of their curriculum will help fill the gap of …show more content…
This experience allows the student to combine both theory and skills into their practice. Current societal factors have changed how nursing students are able to achieve this learning. Clinical sites are becoming an issue to many nursing education curriculum. Aging population and nursing shortages have increased the need for practicing nurses. Competition for clinical sites have nurse educators thinking of different alternatives for clinical practice. One solution to this increasing need is high-fidelity simulation labs that give nursing students clinical learning in a safe environment. The future of nursing depends on these new innovative learning
