Why Many People Turn To Nursing Homes

Your loved ones will likely need some help with the activities of daily living. Many people do not mind helping their loved ones. However, it is often not possible for family members to be around all of the time. That is why many people turn to nursing homes.

When most people put their loved ones in a nursing home, they do not suspect that anything bad will happen. Nursing homes are required to comply by both state and federal laws. Failing to adhere to these regulations puts the elderly at risk. However, nursing home abuse is an extremely common occurrence. In fact, it is estimated that some form of abuse occurs in about 25 percent of nursing homes.

Sexual Abuse- Any type of unwanted and forced sexual contact can be considered sexual abuse.

Neglect- If staff members fail to provide the proper care to patients, then they are neglecting them. This includes things such as failing to bathe, dress and feed the patient. Additionally, if staff members fail to address hazards that put a person at risk, then they are also neglecting the patient.

Many nursing home patients are ashamed to admit that they have been a victim of abuse. That is why it is important for people to keep in close contact with their loved ones who are in a nursing home. You should immediately get help from a legal counselor if you suspect that your loved one has been a victim of abuse.

Signs Of Nursing Home Abuse

The type of abuse someone is suffering will determine the signs he or she exhibits. If your loved one is being physically abused, then you may notice the following burns, dirty clothing, extreme weakness, bruises, bed sores and poor hygiene.
