As the newest generation of leaders entering the profession, how will you embrace the Future of Nursing recommendations to transform practice? How will you integrate your education, special talents, and goals as you contribute to the continued evolution of our practice profession? What will be most difficult for you? We future nurses have, “the opportunity to play a central role in transforming the healthcare system to create a more accessible, high quality, and value-driven environment for patients” (Johnson, 2011, p. 66). If we all come together, we can make a difference, making our central aim; patient centered care. Even though the concept of patient centered care has been identified as an important need in the healthcare setting, the effectiveness of achieving it is still not met. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundations and the Institute of Medicine (2208) formed the Future of Nursing to identify changes that are necessary to teach future nurses with the ultimate goal to prepare them with the competencies and skills required to practice in a redesigned health care system (Halstead, 2012, para1). Leadership is a requirement to meet the goal of transforming the healthcare system. According to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) (2010), “nurses are key leaders in the effective use of information technology to impact the quality and efficiency of healthcare services” (Seinsmeier, 2010).
Identifying changes necessary to transform practice is not everything, nurses need to continue their education, training and implementing their learning into their practice. As future nurses we need to understand that graduating does not mean the end of our education, but rather that we must continue to learn and grow throughout our professional career. Changing the healthcare system and practice goes from the bedside to the boardroom, but not stopping locally instead making an impact nationally, and internationally. My goal is to continue my education towards my DNP or my masters to expand my knowledge and practice to the best of my scope of practice. I have experience as a leaders since I have work as a manager of a restaurant for more than three years, I consider that having that ability will aid me in involving myself in organizations that would develop and implement changes in nursing practice, that would benefit patient care and their families as well as us
